More than 5 kilometres without unnecessary stops: how the “Green Wave” changed traffic on the Small Ring Road

Specialists of the Traffic Organisation Centre of Tashkent City have synchronised the operation of traffic lights on the next section of the Small Ring Road and introduced the “Green Wave” system.

The system is in effect on a 5-kilometre stretch of road from the pedestrian crossing in front of the Uzbekistan State University of World Languages to the pedestrian crossing opposite the “Visol” wedding hall in the area of the intersection with Shaykh Zayniddin Street.

🚦 On this route, 12 traffic light facilities have been synchronised with each other. When moving at the recommended speed of 50–60 km/h, a vehicle can pass through the road section continuously without unnecessary stops at each subsequent intersection.

📊 What has changed in practice?

Before the “Green Wave” system was adjusted, it took 11 minutes 30 seconds to cover this section of the road. After the traffic lights were synchronised, the travel time was reduced to 9 minutes 40 seconds.

Thus, a driver saves 1 minute 50 seconds on just this 5-kilometre section of the road.

To imagine this result more clearly: 1 minute 50 seconds is approximately equal to the time of three standard phases of a red light, each lasting 35–40 seconds. In other words, the effect of the “Green Wave” for the driver is equivalent to saving the time of three unnecessary stops at a red light or significantly reducing such waits.

In practical terms, this means less waiting in front of a red light, fewer stops and re-accelerations, as well as smoother movement over a distance of 5 kilometres.

For an even clearer comparison: while maintaining the same effect, travelling this section of the road 10 times means saving approximately 18 minutes 20 seconds. If a driver regularly travels this route, the saved time gradually amounts to tens of minutes.

📈 As a result of synchronising 12 traffic light facilities, it has been possible to reduce the time required to cover the road, increase the average speed of movement and decrease the number of mandatory stops at traffic lights.

In this way, the main benefit of the “Green Wave” is felt by the driver directly on the road: instead of successive waits at several traffic lights, the opportunity is created to cover the road section more continuously and steadily.
